WEY TO BE SAFE: CAN I ROW TODAY?
This page provides a range of tools that Risk Assessors can use to make their pre-boating risk assessment.

The pre-outing Risk Assessment (RA) should take into account various factors, including:
-
EA river state boards - Via the .GOV website or seen in the page header
-
Flow rate - Also seen in the page header or further down the page (see gauge at Walton)
-
River level - Again, this features in the page header (also see below)
-
Boat type/size, the age, experience and strength of those boating (including passing 'yellow boards safety test')
-
The state of Shepperton weir pool and how or if your crew(s) can navigate it (if unsure, go look)
-
Wind speeds and direction (see below),
-
Air and water temperatures (read about cold water shock)
-
The weather generally (including likelihood of lightning – app link below), and visibility.

About our Flow/Height & EA board widget:
The data from the website header widget uses the .GOV website API. This API is refreshed at approx. 15 minute intervals but varies depending on weather conditions. *The flow is measured only at Walton but can be used to infer river speed at Shepperton. Height is measured at both Walton and Shepperton.

The flow and height read outs are colour coded according to the WRC Risk Assessment Guidelines for Boating. You can find out what these are here: pre-boating risk assessment.

The EA Boards are also taken from the EA website (.GOV), which are updated daily by 11am.

If in doubt, you can check our data against the sources linked below.
In the event the service for river levels is unavailable or not up-to-date, please try the Gov.uk Flood Information Service.
